After five years of futile efforts to find or confirm sightings of any Caribbean monk seals, the U.S. on Friday declared the species extinct, noting it is the only seal to vanish due to human causes.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

When are we going to stop our greedy, short-sighted ways?!

Pretty sad how man kind can just kill off an entire species like that. No wonder why the world is in the shape it is today.

mankind is a curse to to enviroment, the rich who run everything dont care. uncontacted tribes in the amazon are more civil towards eachother than us out in the so called civilized world. mankind is destroying the very enviroment that he needs to exist in, and i fear it might be too late. is the oil and cars really worth our extinction?

Since there are uncontacted tribes in the world, it seems mankind has not corrupted everything.
When I used to fly (I don't anymore, and may never again on a commerical airline) I looked down from 30,000 feet and couldn't even see humans, although large-city lights can be seen from space.
I think it's pretty egocentric to think we can destroy the earth. But, that being said, I would be willing to work to help keep species from going extinct if I could do something about it--something that was cost effective.
Trouble is, what if a species was supposed to go extict in order to keep a natural balance? Has science explored that possibility? It has happened countless times before humans had any influence.

Since the last sighting was in 1952 and it was not declared endangered until nearly two decades later, and there were only around 250,000 in the population, why is the assumption that it was human influence alone that caused the extinction.
As for the seal's importance to marine ecology, I doubt 250,000 animals had much of an impact.
I think it may have been nice to have attempted to breed some in captivity, perhaps, and wonder if this was attempted, though I doubt this was a concern in 1952.

I think that 'man' is so selfish they will only 'bother' helping when it affects them, personally; or, if the 'bother' doesn't put them too much out of their way.

i.e., recycling: people tend to recycle when it is a service provided by their 'trash' pick up service or when they need money (aluminum cans).

Why do selfish people throw trash in the ocean or out of their autos? Because they can. They are selfish and the world revolves around them.

I'm not immune from selfishness. I do not recycle my plastic water bottles or newspapers. I would if there was a service offered by my local trash collector or town.

I've digressed, however, from the topic. Every species we lose through extinction impacts another, whether it is the human species or just a tiny species of plankton, they are impacted. Don't let the small population fool you. We loose a little bit of humanity every time we allow extinction to occur.

How many times have you wondered what it would be like to see a Dodo bird? Or, to have seen a Tasmanian Tiger at a city zoo? We will never get that chance, nor will our children, or any future children. Now, no one will get the chance to see this Caribbean seal. It's a shame and a disgrace to humanity.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trivializing extinctions--it's just that there have been so many, including mass events, be it volcanic activity, asteroid impacts, etc., and the world "keeps on ticking"
It's surface is erased and it starts anew. One day mankind may even go, and awareness, other than through the eyes of the meek that inherit the earth, will cease.
Then, the three-eyed one-toed spotted Glexmarf from the caves of Sumatra will have to take care of protecting species from extinction, only if it cares. :)

The dodo was mainly killed off by predators as the meat was greasy and nasty according to the first explorers that ate them. The tiger on the other hand...well I know the last one in captivity died a hundred years ago, not sure what caused their destruction. Not even sure it is climate change, because don't believe in global warming, everything about it points to a huge money changing hands scam by so-called enviormentalists and caring people.. go look at Al Gores website and see how much money they say you have to pay them to reduce your carbon footprint and make you feel better btw.

He still lives in his 20 thousand sq foot house with just he his wife and his servants.. and for some reason since all rich people are bad, he escapes people wraiths even though he is super rich too. I know there are millions of species In Earths histories that have gone extinct not due to man but to predators and such.. but no one says we have to stop the jackals from eating the deers?

I am not saying we shouldn't protect things that we can or clean up after ourselves.. I am saying if you have an argument, be balanced in it...yes human impact is bad on water buffalo but so are wolves. Should we go out and all shoot the wolves now? Never forget that humans are predators an animals as well and we need to eat too.

Now as far as the seal thing.. twenty years ago these same scientists were saying the Earth was cooling and we are heading into an ice-age...so how do they know supposed climate change is responsible. Hey El-nino has been around for hundreds of years.. but now they blame that phenomenon on the global warming myth?

Seems like someone is trying to force an agenda on unthinking people without any concrete proof of anything yet.
